Summer Spotlight: Anthony Colangelo

Anthony Colangelo

Major: Chemical Engineering
Expected Graduation: 2025

  • Who are you interning with?

UPMC 3D Printing Program

  • Explain the details of your internship.

This summer, I have been working on creating patient-driven anatomical models for both clinical and educational purposes. We use 3D printing in various materials to create models and novel medical devices for patients to understand their conditions and for surgeons as guides in the OR.

I am also using my chemical engineering knowledge to create a solvent recycler to cut costs for the program!

  • How did you find this opportunity?

I found it through shadowing Dr. Anish Ghodadra, an interventional radiologist at UPMC. He is also the Vice President of the Pre-Medical Fraternity I am in, Phi Delta Epsilon.

  • What has your experience been so far?

It has been such a great experience! I feel like I can really make an impact on how patients understand their care. Being able to create models that guide surgeons for procedures like jaw surgery has also been very rewarding!

  • What's your best advice for students who might be looking for a similar opportunity?

Just be curious! I was able to find this opportunity by showing interest and asking the right questions
